Visions from Remembered Futures
The first exhibition of the SuperRare Gallery in SoHo
New York, USA
"Visions from Remembered Futures" was the opening exhibition of the SuperRare Gallery, the first physical space of the NFT platform SuperRare, a pop-up at 417 West Broadway in SoHo, New York. Curated by An Rong, SuperRare's senior curator, with Mika Bar-On Nesher, the group show gathered digital artists working around science fiction and futurism, among them Krista Kim, Botto, Reuben Wu, Blake Kathryn, Dangiuz, Idil Dursun and Federico Clapis. It was the first of several rotating exhibitions planned for the space.
The works were shown on Samsung screens arranged across the gallery so that most pieces faced a counterpart on the opposite wall, each with a label carrying a QR code linking to the token's history on the blockchain. Clapis presented MetaSense. The installation photographs show it in a wood-framed screen with a pair of headphones hung beside it: the image is split between the rounded field of view of a virtual reality headset, framing a sumptuous classical salon with a grand piano, and, below it, the bare and dilapidated room where the wearer is actually standing. Visitors put on the headphones to follow the sound of the piece.
The contrast between a luxurious virtual space and a degraded physical one is a recurring concern in Clapis' work on the metaverse and on how technology reshapes perception. Showing it in SuperRare's first gallery placed the work at a moment when NFT platforms were testing how digital art could be experienced in a physical room in New York.
