Spazio mentale = ambiente
Curated by Marco Tagliafierro, Bianchizardin gallery
Milan, Italy
Spazio mentale = ambiente ("mental space = environment") was a solo exhibition of Federico Clapis at Bianchi Zardin Contemporary Art, the gallery on Via Maroncelli in Milan, curated by Marco Tagliafierro. The curatorial text placed the works between an archaeology of the future and an avant-garde of the past, between utopias and "retrotopias". The show's poster used the image of a white fish-shaped jerrycan tied to a yellow buoy floating at sea.
The installation views show a sparse arrangement across the gallery's white rooms and parquet floors, where sculptures and found objects enter into dialogue with the building's own fittings. A pale blue figure of a woman with clasped hands stands near a white film projector fitted with a wire basket; a magenta gas canister rests on a concrete block; a blue and white porcelain vase is capped with a block of stone; an old child's scooter is fixed with a yellow wheel clamp. On the walls hang a cream bust whose face is smoothed into a single blank surface and a large blue head, while open utility cabinets, a boiler niche and a meter box become part of the display, one of them housing a Super Mario mask among electrical wiring. The documentary video was shot from a remote-controlled car moving through the rooms.
The exhibition shows a more conceptual side of Clapis' practice, close to assemblage and to the readymade, in which the domestic and technical environment of the space becomes material for the work.
